• SYNOPSIS
A documentary that aims right to the center of of a modern-day plague. For this project, young Italian director Leandro Manuel Emede becomes a reporter who unveils the bitter side of beauty, anorexia. He documents the process behind a controversial photograph taken by Oliviero Toscani. A picture that has split public opinion and has shed a completely new light on the disease. The film opens in Paris, the shoot location, with the arrival of Toscani at the airport and the taxi ride to the photo studio – a large white space that gradually comes alive with lights, screens, hairdressers and all the crew at work in preparation for the entrance of the model for the shoot, Isabelle Caro. Footage from the shoot itself has been edited with reactions and comments generated by the image from across the world, ranging from indignation to interest and in a variety of mediums, from interviews to the opinions of people off the street, television footage, radio recordings, articles, notes, blogs, ideas, insults, compliments, indignation and admiration aired on CNN, RAI, CBS, SKY, MTV and featured on Time, Daily News, The Wall Street Journal, Corriere della Sera and Vanity Fair. Besides the views of ordinary people and the reactions of both the Italian and international press, the film includes a number of personal contributions such as those of Vittorio Feltri, Achille Bonito Oliva and Vittorio Sgarbi. The supports used for the considerable material that has gone to make up ANOREXIA range from professional video cameras to camcorders, mobile phones and traditional cameras. The selection included in the press roundup comes from a variety of sources, from television to radio, the Web, dailies, weeklies and monthlies from around the world. The original idea was to tell the story of this project. “I think about a problem and an image takes shape in my mind... this is a creative process!” says Oliviero Toscani.
